What is the role of media in politics? Is it to disseminate information, or is it to sway the American public into believing a certain way?
From the beginning of our country's political process, the role of media in politics has served as double duty: to provide details that American citizens need to both be informed and to make wise decisions, and to promote a point-of-view held by those in charge of the media outlet. In early days, newspapers served as the primary portal for political facts. Many newspapers could be well trusted to provide facts without commentary, with those that did choose to report in a biased manner often displaying their affiliations in the names of the newspapers themselves, such as the Los Angeles Evening Republican or the Tribune Democrat.

Part of the reason is the sheer number of media outlets available. Cable news has changed the face of the role of media in politics completely; news that once was forced to be shared only in half hour segments once per day is now available 24 hours every day on a number of separate channels. Newspapers and magazines are accessible for every market niche imaginable. The Internet, of course, allows even more political news to be shared, but creates its own problems with the number of individuals whose credibility is questionable increasing at an alarming rate.
These days, the bulk of media outlets purport to be fair and balanced in their reporting. BillOReilly, a FOX News reporter, tells of no party lines, no distortion, no spin political coverage." Campbell Brown, a CNN personality, claims no bias, no bull on her Election Center program. Though Count down with Keith Olbermann does not pretend to be unbiased, the MSNBC program chooses to bill itself as a unique newscast that counts down the days top stories with no mention of political leanings though it was, indeed, Olbermann who stated on his program to our countrys President that he should,Shut the hell up.The bias in all of these programs is clear, though some more stark than others.
In a recent Rasmussen study, 69 percent of those polled believe the media is not only biased, but is actively campaigning for their candidate of choice. According to Rasmussen, "by a nearly five-to-one margin voters believe they are trying to help Barack Obama" and over half of those polled believe that the media is actively trying to undermine the Republican nominee for Vice President, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. A Pew Research study also shows a bias in the media. Only 31 percent of the stories appearing in the press about Senator Obama are negative, while John McCain is victim to a staggering 57 percent of negative press stories.
The question of the role of media in politics still remains. Most would agree with what it should be: a means to learn as much as possible about the political goings on in our country and around the world. Unfortunately, most also agree that the media takes its responsibilities far too lightly and pushes its own agenda far too much.
