Petroleum - Its Uses And Benefits

Petroleum or crude oil is a naturally occurring liquid found in formations in the Earth consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons (mostly alkanes) of various lengths. Petroleum literally means rock oil; oil that comes from rock. Petroleum or Crude Oil is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon-based liquid which is sometimes present in porous rocks beneath the earth's surface. Petroleum is formed by the slow alteration of organic remains over time. It consists of a mixture of liquid hydrocarbon compounds and varies widely in composition, color, density, and viscosity. This liquid after distillation yields a range of combustible fuels, petrochemicals, and lubricants. Compounds and mixtures of compounds separated from crude petroleum by distillation include gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, fuel oil, some types of alcohol, benzene, heavy naphtha, different grades of lubricating oils and residuum. Petroleum is usually classified according to the predominance of paraffin or asphalted compounds and accordingly is said to have a paraffin base, an intermediate base, or an asphalt base.

Oil wells are drilled as deep as six miles into the Earth to search for petroleum. These wells can cost millions of dollars to drill, yet drilling is done because petroleum is a valuable natural resource. Although the major use of petroleum is as a fuel (gasoline, jet fuel, heating oil) and petroleum and natural gas are often used to generate electricity, there are many other uses as well.

Politics

Here are some of the ways petroleum is used in our every day lives. All plastic is made from petroleum and plastic is used almost everywhere, in cars, houses, toys, computers and clothing. Asphalt used in road construction is a petroleum product as is the synthetic rubber in the tires. Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, as do fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, detergents, phonograph records, photographic film, furniture, packaging materials, surfboards, paints and artificial fibers used in clothing, upholstery, and carpet backing. Helium, sulfur and other valuable materials are produced from oil wells along with petroleum itself. Petroleum is used principally as a source of fuel and lubricating oils. Only when these supplies are restricted or threatened does the average person begin to realize their importance.

Petroleum - Its Uses And Benefits

The top three oil producing countries are Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States. About 80% of the world's readily accessible reserves are located in the Middle East, with 62.5% coming from the five Arab countries: Saudi Arabia (12.5%), U.A.E., Iraq, Qatar and Kuwait. Millions of people around the world are employed to find or produce petroleum, ship and refine it and manufacture and market the many oils and waxes made from it.

Although there are many alternatives to petroleum fuels, an analysis of costs and benefits shows that petroleum is superior in most every area. Hydrogen, ethanol, hybrid, and biomass technologies are promising for automobiles and may soon increase efficiency and reduce emissions; but many of these technologies have not yet proven sufficiently profitable to providers or attractive to consumers. Petroleum retains a key advantage because the price of oil remains low compared to forms of energy with lower environmental impacts, like wind and solar power. Unlike hydrogen or even natural gas, oil is easily transportable and there is a vast infrastructure in place to support its use.

There are many factors due to which oil prices are rising but still petroleum is a necessity. These reasons are lack of available capacity across the oil supply chain in production, refinery upgrading and transportation infrastructure; surging demand in emerging economies; apparent insensitivity of consumers to the price signal; uncertainties related to the weather (hurricanes) or to politics (Iran, Iraq, Venezuela, Nigeria); and increasing activity in the commodities markets. It is not very useful to blame any single player in the game. This could pose danger to the economy and business of the world.

Therefore, benefits of petroleum have brought enumerable benefits to human civilization: quality of life, dynamic prosperity and a source of income to energy traders.

Big Butts

I come from German ancestry, almost all of my forebearers, are German. I am a third generation, American. However because of excessive in-breeding by my Grandparents, I am almost all German by descent.

Not too bad really, I was always a very good athlete, but there was one stigma I never could shake, The German big butt syndrome (GBBS). It seems that all Germans (and their progeny) have big butts! And I don't mean kinda big, I mean BIG.

Politics

Like I said I was always a good athlete, but even in the best of shape, I still had a noticeable butt. "Bubble butt" is what they called me at work 8 years ago, while at the time I was running 35mi. a week to prepare for a marathon!

Big Butts

Well here I am, 8 years older, and only jogging (maybe shuffling is a better term), 12 mi a week. I try not to make a habit of bending over in front of my crew at work. The whistles and the snickers, are very embarrassing! Hey! I can't help my DNA man! Show a brother some compassion will ya? And to think what a good boss (that's jeffe, in Spanish) I am to them.

Like "Dirty Harry" said,"A man has to know his limits", and right now my limits are being contained in a 36" waist. At least I know if I hap-hazardously bend over in front of someone, no one will get hurt, injured, or frightened unless I clip them with my big butt.

Bad Awareness on Food Labelling on the Dispatches Program

Dispatches a few nights ago touched on the cereal manufacturers in Britain. This program touched on a similar topic as did the Supersize Me film in 2004.

The topic of program was regarding cereal manufacturers in Britain who refuse to accept the long proposed traffic light system for labeling the 3 essential ingredients, salt, sugar and fat.

Politics

Currently, there has to be labeling on the outside of the packaging listing the full ingredients, but a survey by the Dispatches team showed that most people on the high street when asked to decipher a standard box, the majority couldn't understand the information being given to them and subsequently purchased on the 'perception' of what may be conceived as healthy.

Bad Awareness on Food Labelling on the Dispatches Program

As the Daily Mail confirms also;

Revealed: The breakfast cereals saltier than crisps and with more sugar than a doughnut.

Read this to see if you would have expected the following;

Brand

Sugar per 30g bowl

Kellogg's Frosties

- 11.1g

Nestle Cookie Crisp

- 10.59g

Nestle Honey Cheerios

- 10.53g

Nestle Nesquik

- 10.5g

Sugar Puffs

- 10.5g

Kellogg's Coco Pops

- 10.2g

Kellogg's Honey Loops

- 10.2g

Why write about this on a Blackpool Hotel blog? We'll for one politics, as for many people enrages me, and where the system fails is when common sense does not prevail. There is a fine connection though in this topic in that I was interested in watching this program and comparing it to a good old fashion Blackpool hotel cooked breakfast.

Well according to the Food Standards Agency, they were asked the question and said;

Can a traditional cooked breakfast ever be a healthy choice?

Yes - If you grill lean bacon, poach the eggs and include reduced sugar/salt baked beans, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms cooked without fat, and serve it all up with thick crusty granary bread, you'll be giving your customers a delicious cooked breakfast that is also healthy and balanced.

OK we don't have stats and figures here to provide for you, but taking into account the ingredients, surely you could only agree with them?

It's not all bad though, Kellogg's have released a very detailed press release following the airing of the Dispatches program. Some of the information listed on the site sounds convincing and all adds to a case on their defense. However one of the main points in Dispatches was the 'traffic light system' which Kellogg's answers with the following;

If labels are to help shoppers make informed choices they need to be based on what people actually eat in a serving. That's why we use GDA's, not traffic lights, which judge a food based on 100g portion.

They have NOT addressed the research of Dispatches in which they highlighted that the average consumer of these products does not either read or understand the GDA labeling, hence buying as said on 'perception'. How many parents would buy a cereal if it contained 3 red stars for fat, sugar and salt?

It's ironic really that the producers of Kellogg's Common Sense (main sponsors of the Olympics) don't seem to apply any Common Sense in helping inform parents the best choice for their children.

I suspect with a little peer pressure and more publicising Kellogg's would possibly introduce this method. However they have to be wary of turning children off their products in the process of producing real healthier options. It would be a start in trying to reduce the growing obesity problem that is plaguing this country!

Five Surprising Super Tuesday Predictions

Here are five surprising 2012 Super Tuesday delegate predictions, based on my analysis of Real Clear Politics polling averages, public opinion polls, straw polls, and recent events in the ten states voting tomorrow.

(The takeaway: Non-Romney candidates will have their moments in the sun... and then the Romney juggernaut will continue crushing everything in its path.)

Politics

Prediction #1: In almost every primary state, the candidate who wins the most delegates will win more delegates than all other candidates combined in that state

Five Surprising Super Tuesday Predictions

In other words, in each of the seven primary states (not the three caucus states, where anything goes), one candidate will almost always win more than 50% of that state's delegates. This may seem unlikely, given the fractious nature of the 2012 GOP primaries, dispersed support for the remaining candidates, and the proportional nature of delegate allegation. However, these states' apportionment systems are quasi-proportional, which means that large numbers of delegates end up going to the top two (occasionally three) candidates, and none to those who fail to meet a minimum threshold of 15% or 20% of the vote. An even larger haul goes to the first-place winner, even if he beats the runner-up by only a small percentage.

Prediction #2: Rick Santorum will win only two states, Oklahoma and Tennessee

Santorum leads the polls in these two southern states, but Romney's ahead of Santorum in the other eight. Ohio's too close to call but has been trending toward Romney since his Michigan victory. Santorum failed to submit complete paperwork for nine Ohio districts, which makes him ineligible for 18 state delegates. This means that recent polls showing him and Romney neck-and-neck may overpredict Santorum's delegates relative to Romney's.

Prediction #3: Only Romney will win delegates in all 10 states-and he'll win at least 10 in each state

Romney is second in the polls to Santorum in two states, second to Newt Gingrich in one, and on top in the other seven. Vermont has only 17 delegates, but Romney is heavily favored to win there. Ron Paul will do better in caucus states-Idaho (32 delegates), North Dakota (28), and Alaska (27)-but Romney should do well enough to pick up 10 delegates each. Second-place Santorum will win nothing in Virginia, where he's not on the ballot, and possibly none in Idaho, where he received 0 votes in a Tea Party Straw Poll. For about half the states, Paul and Gingrich will pick up no delegates.

Prediction #4: Paul will win more delegates in Idaho than in the other nine states combined

Paul does better in small caucus states, where his well-organized operation is more influential. Santorum will likely be eliminated in early rounds of voting in Idaho, where candidates are dropped in successive rounds until one has at least 50% of the vote. Outside of the three caucus states, Paul should win at most five delegates, all in Virginia. Paul cleaned up in early caucus states, but he won't be able to replicate that success in the proportional allocation states. He will likely be the only candidate who doesn't win more delegates on Super Tuesday than he has won to date.

Prediction #5: After Romney's rout on Tuesday, Santorum will still have at least half the number of Romney's delegates and a quarter of all delegates awarded to date

Romney's likely to clean up on Super Tuesday; Gingrich is far from his December polling highs; and Paul never had a chance of winning the nomination; but the race isn't over, if only because the three also-rans are too stubborn to quit. It'll be virtually impossible for Gingrich or Paul to reach the required 1,144 delegates to win-either would have to win about 75% of the remaining delegates. Santorum's not likely to quit soon, even though he'd have to win two-thirds of the remaining delegates, which would be possible only in the event of a major Romney scandal or sudden shift in public opinion.

As Romney's political director put it, Santorum's showing on Super Tuesday will not "do anything to cut the delegate lead. He is going to fall further and further behind. It becomes a mathematical battle as much as it is a political one, and the math just doesn't add up for Santorum." (As one Santorum senior strategist put it, "The argument that math is on their side is uninspiring and laughable," which just proves that the Santorum campaign doesn't understand math.)

Note: For these predictions I used RCP polling averages, recent polls where averages were unavailable, and straw poll results. I made no firm predictions for caucus state North Dakota, for which there was only a Tea Party straw poll last fall in which Herman Cain won and Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich didn't even place; and caucus state Alaska, for which there was only a poll from October 2010 with Mike Huckabee in first place. Nate Silver and Intrade were not consulted for this article.

Why We Avoid Talking About Religion and Politics

As far back children we are taught to avoid two subjects in polite conversation - politics and religion.

The topics are considered taboo by some because people hold such strong opinions about them. So, in order to keep the peace, we are told to avoid talking about them in public. It is considered the polite thing to do.

Politics

People hold their feelings about politics and religion very dear. Wars are continuing to be fought over them because many people feel their view is the correct one and feel threatened by opposing views.

Why We Avoid Talking About Religion and Politics

Those who feel that strongly are usually unwilling to open their minds to see others viewpoints. They are more comfortable with the familiar and don't like change. They may be unable to go beyond their comfort zone.

In politics, discussions about controversial subjects are often troublesome. Debates get heated and often little is accomplished. Sometimes insults are thrown. Many times the subjects get tabled for lack of a consensus on how to solve the issue.

When hot button issues are discussed in political forums, they can attract zealots. These extremists are so blinded by their own views they will rarely find common ground with their opponents in a political discussion.

You may wonder how politicians ever get anything done in this type of environment. What ends up happening, is that politicians on both sides of the argument stack the sides with their supporters. In American politics the process allows citizens to vote for people who they believe best represent their views. They can also contribute money to their campaigns and volunteer their time stumping for them.

By aligning themselves with like-minded people, politicians can collect enough votes to pass legislation that supports their views. That satisfies their supporters and keeps them in office at least until the next election.

How To Regain Lost Trust

You can regain lost trust, but first you must understand what TRUST is.

Trust is the most foundational block of any relationship. Trust is involved in all the basic elements of a healthy relationship: namely, love (respect and consideration for another person), communication, commitment and honesty. Without trust you may get feelings, you may get the high of the "moment," you may get patience and tolerance but nothing will provide the strength and the solidity you need for a lasting relationship as trust. Why? Because the root of trust is WHAT YOU BELIEVE about the other person. And your BELIEF about the other person is the accumulation of experiences that have either affirmed or corroded the original commitment or promise. And let me hasten to say that TRUST is not just about big promises and commitments. It could just be the other person's body language, the eyes or an air of authenticity. Have you ever felt like you are in the presence of a person for the first time and you find yourself saying "Somehow I trust this person with my tummy?" Trust is born in the way the other person register in our TRUST radar. Finally what you come to believe about another person is what directs your behavior and actions towards that person. So, trust is critical to the dynamics of any relationship, whether is a business, politics, a working environment, marriage, family or friendships.

Politics

When you have believed something about a person and that person has broken your "trust" in that belief, there isn't a whole lot left.

How To Regain Lost Trust

Take marriage for example. The promise to stay married until "death do, us apart" is a serious promise. You trust that person. Would you marry if you wouldn't trust? When divorce happens, what makes you think that the person who broke the promise with you is trustworthy of anything else later on? The tacit promise parents make to raise their children to the best of their ability when they bring them into the world is a serious one. What makes you think children will trust you as a parent, when you did not do your best to absorb information about good parenting and depended on God to be a good role model to them? Cheating, lying, gossip, "backstabbing," disloyalty, miscommunication or the lack of it, dishonesty, not paying money back, not being on time, an unreturned to call, are all promises that once broken change the level of trust someone has placed on you. Trust is broken by changing the belief system another person has about you.

Now, I know we have all broken promises. I have broken many promises, many times and it hurts me in the pit of my stomach when I realize I miserably failed so many times and have let so many people down. So this article is not from a guy that has never lost trust from people but about someone who realizes what happened and took steps to recover the trust I lost when I failed.

Let me say it again: You can regain the trust you lost. That is, if the other person has a good heart towards you. First, you need to accept four basic principles and then follow that understanding with massive ACTION to regain the trust from the person whose trust you betrayed.

FOUR PRINCIPLES

1. When you let someone down and betray their trust you have actually betrayed yourself first and foremost all. Further more, that's the first person you must work with: YOURSELF! You must come to terms with your own failure, your own humanity. What happened? Why did it happen? Was an accident or is that a pattern of your character? Proud people stumble on this first one and simply can not do it!

2. When you let someone down and betray their trust you must acknowledge you did it and that will hurt your pride. If you are not ready to be humble and talk to the person whose trust you betrayed, you are not ready to regain trust from that person.

3. When you let someone down and betray their trust it's going to take time and effort to recover it. It will not happen instantly. This is one of the greatest challenges "betrayers" face. They usually want to "just move on." They want instant gratification. It just doesn't happen that way!

4. When you let someone down and betray their trust, in spite of what you may do to regain their trust you should be ready to possibly be rejected and you may never regain the lost trust again. In that case it is out of your hands, even if it hurts! What kicks in here is character: you did the right thing and your heart is right. Move on being the good person you are!

FIVE STEPS TO REGAIN TRUST IN YOURSELF AND FROM OTHERS YOU HAVE BETRAYED

1. Admit your mistake or the way you hurt the other person

This is the most difficult step in re-building trust. Address the issue that caused the loss of trust head on. If it was you not cherishing your spouse, or treating your marriage as a sacred trust, or lying, or mistreating the other person, or not fulfilling a promise... whatever... address the issue and ask forgiveness. Asking forgiveness for some vague, stupid unrelated behavior will be considered by the offended person as one more step into the destruction of trust! It's simply insulting. My recommendation? If you have betrayed someone's trust, don't talk to that person until you understand what you did wrong and you are ready to deal with it honestly. Admitting your mistake honestly is not something you do to "move on" with "your" life; it's something you do to re-establish a broken relationship, to reconcile and regain that person's trust, which is a big issue; regaining trust is not about "your" own selfish pain!

2. Change

Nothing rebuilds trust faster than doing what the other person will perceive as you having changed! Whatever you did to betray another person's trust needs to be changed! This is a no brainer. You want to create a trusting environment with the person you betrayed. Share specifically what your plan of action is to regain that person's trust. Ask that person to hold you accountable to your promised changes. Believe me, if you are being honest and the other person has a heart, he/she will love you for it. There is nothing more refreshing and affirming than to know that someone cares for you so much that they are willing to change what hurts you!

3. Share honest information

Information is power. This is the number one trust builder. Most situations I have faced where trust has been betrayed are directly connected to lack of communication, lack of information, lies and cover-up stories. If you are afraid, say so. If you made a wrong move, tell the truth. If you fail, admit to it. If you are guarding "privileged information" and your relationship depends on the other person knowing what's going on, be brave and say it. Information makes the other person feel like "we are in this together." Withholding information when it's due to the other person is one of the most painful forms of betrayal. Be straightforward and honest. If you are trying to regain your spouse's trust, open up about finances, time management, the people you meet, your appointments and your whereabouts. The more information you provide the better it is.

4. Share yourself with the other person as a team player not as a victim

A "win-win" situation is difficult to obtain when you have betrayed someone's trust, but it is possible in time. Just remember one thing... The person you betrayed knows you and he/she will not accept external, superficial changes. That person is your worst and most vociferous critic because you hurt him/her, and you better know if you heart is changed or not before you play the "game." What's the classic statement of a victim? "I did it because..." A victim's fingerprint is: BLAME, JUSTIFY AND EXPLAIN. A non-victim person assumes responsibility for his/her deed and seeks reconciliation with the other person because he/she needs him/her in a relationship.

5. Be consistent

If you betrayed your spouse's trust, focus on being consistent and following steps 1-4 steadily. It may take more than one conversation. It may take time for the other person to observe you and realize that you are "walking the talk." If you betrayed your bosses trust, focus on being consistent in building your trust level. The same applies to your children, relatives and friends. "Walking the talk" is what builds trust again.

Though the idea behind following these steps is to regain the trust of someone you betrayed or let down, ultimately, doing what's right (admitting you're wrong and CHANGING) is for your own sake and the core of your character. Good people don't only do good things to get results. They also do the right thing because they know that at the end the greatest reward is looking at themselves in the mirror and knowing they are authentic and honest. That's what brings the greatest happiness in this life and that's what it means to live in The Life Zone!

If you are dealing with a tricky situation and you want to regain your spouse's or children's trust, be careful! Don't rush into it, don't postpone it forever, and don't expose your "laundry" irresponsibly. That may be the beginning of your honest journey but the end of your relationship with that person forever. Irresponsible honesty hurts, responsible honesty heals! What's the difference? You do it for the other person and considering the greater picture. Many times a person from the outside can help you with perspective, timing and the mode in which you will journey towards regaining lost trust. I can coach you on the best steps to regain trust without destroying what you have.

Obama Backs Ethanol Production

Building on his recent State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama is continuing his push for energy reform and the adoption of new renewable energy programs. Critical to these energy reforms are federal policies that offer farm loans and farm subsidies to ethanol and other bio-fuel producers. While not specifically featured in the State of the Union, the Obama administration has been remarkably supportive of the ethanol industry and his Department of Agriculture has made ethanol production a top priority. By offering farm loans and federal support for the production of corn ethanol, the federal government has signaled its support for energy reform.

President Obama's support for the ethanol industry has been unequivocal over the past several years, often extending beyond offering farm subsidies and farm loans for corn growers. Last year, for example, Obama directed the USDA to support the creation of 10,000 ethanol flex-fuel pumps in the US. In addition, the USDA and the Obama Administration have thrown their weight behind continuing tax credits for ethanol producers, farm loans and subsidies for commodity growers, and tariffs on foreign ethanol, all policies aimed at stimulating domestic production of major bio-fuels.

Politics

In addition to corn ethanol production, the Obama Administration and congressional leaders have expanded federal aid to include other forms of bio-fuels. In January, the USDA announced expanded support for farm loans and farm subsidies for farmers and energy producers involved in the creation of cellulosic ethanol production. The organization recently announced several million dollars of federal loans dedicated to the construction of bio-refineries across the country, including projects in Oregon and Iowa. Funding is directed in the form of agricultural loans, farm subsidies, and tax credits to farmers participating in the production of the various woods, grasses, and non-edible plants that can be refined into bio-fuels.

Obama Backs Ethanol Production

Ethanol producers across the country have praised the Obama administration and congressional supporters for their commitment to energy independence, which, they believe, can only be achieved through ethanol production. Farm loans, farm subsidies, and tax credits are all important tools that can be used to create renewable energy programs across the United States. The importance of the bio-fuel industry is apparent in the bipartisan support for farm loans and farm subsidies devoted to bio-fuel creation. In addition to Barack Obama, major Republican presidential candidates like Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have supported the bio-fuel industry (although to varying degrees). With the Republican primaries heating up and the 2012 Presidential Election looming, farmers, investors, and pundits all anticipate agriculture loans, farm subsidies, and ethanol production will dominate American politics for the next several months.

Confidence Interval Calculations with Microsoft Excel

Confidence intervals often give you useful insights into data sets you're trying to better understand. A confidence interval is the interval around a sample mean into which you expect the population mean to fall a certain percentage of the time.

If you have a sample of size n and know the sample mean m and population standard deviation sigma (s), you can find the range into which the actual population mean will fall x% of the time. Common confidence levels are 90%, 95%, and 99%.

Politics

Using the Confidence Function

Confidence Interval Calculations with Microsoft Excel

The CONFIDENCE function uses the following syntax:

=CONFIDENCE (alpha,s,n)

Alpha is the significance level. It equals 1 minus the confidence level (expressed as a decimal). The s argument is the standard deviation of the data set. The n argument gives the number of items in the sample.

An Example Confidence Interval Calculation

For example, if a sample of 500 college graduates shows that they owe an average of ,000
in student loans at graduation and the population standard deviation is ,000, you can find
a 95% confidence interval estimate of the population mean amount owed.

To do this using the CONFIDENCE function, enter alpha .05 as the first argument, the standard deviation 2000 as the second argument, and n 500 as the third argument. The function looks like this:

=CONFIDENCE (0.05,2000,500)

The function returns the value 175.30. So you can say with 95% confidence that the population
mean is ,000 plus or minus 5.30. (Note that if you have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, you can copy the text shown above and paste the text into an Excel cell to make the calculation on your computer.)

One final note should be made here: If the value of the population standard deviation is unknown, you can use the value of the sample standard deviation as the point estimate of the population standard deviation.

Seattle accountant and author Stephen L. Nelson wrote the MBA's Guide to Microsoft Excel, from which this short article is adapted. Nelson also writes and edits downloadable do-it-yourself business incorporation kits that entrepreneurs and investors can use for setting up a Incorporating in Kansas or a Incorporating in Kentucky.
